Street Food! Thailand

Guay Tiew Ruea translated as Noodles Boat. Guay Tiew Ruea was the first street food that popped into my mind to honor my late Thai grandmother, who always cooked this noodle soup whenever my family had gatherings, visits, and parties.

This poster has instructions for preparation and ingredients, then a story about How the Guay Tew Ruea was created. The map of Thailand was merged with the tortoise color and stood behind the descriptions for Preparation and Ingredients. The color palette was based on the color of the river and ocean. Adding the Thailand flag helps people remember which country the flag is from. The river and Thailand flag influenced the typography color: green + red + blue. I illustrated the boat illustration.

Demystify a Topic: How is Tequila Made?

The tequila we know and love today didn’t start off the way we know it now. In its earliest version, it was known as pulque and was made from the fermented sap of the agave plant by the Aztec civilization in what is now northern Mexico.

Historical Event: Sewol Ferry Tragic

On April 16, 2014, 467 passengers were inside Sewol Ferry in South Korea. The MV (motor vessel) Sewol Ferry was heading to Jeju Islands from Incheon. 304 passengers were deceased: 250 of 325 Danwon High School students' lives were lost. The junior high school students were on a school trip. 172 of 476 people survived, including 75 students.

The captain and the crew suddenly turned as the steering became faster than usual, causing the cargo to loosen and go off-balance. The Rescue Operations came to the sea to save the passengers and the crew. Unfortunately, the captain and the crew were rescued before the passengers. The ship capsized while the passengers were still inside that morning. After the tragedy, South Korea used yellow ribbons and yellow objects to represent the victims and a symbol of hope.

On March 22, 2017, the Sewol Ferry was finally out of the Yellow Sea three years after the tragic event. The Rescue Operations were still searching for nine missing bodies. The people of South Korea and the parents of the missing victims were still hoping the missing bodies could be found soon.

Colors: Blue, yellow, orange, and grey

Concept: Number four–the event happened on the fourth day of a week, the fourth month of a year, and the fourth year in 2010's.

Ideas: focus on yellow objects such as ribbons, balloons, bubbles, ferries, a life vest, paper boats

Text: light or dark text color, San Serif

Mischievous

While experimenting with the word β€œmischievous”  in a playful composition and colors. I started with black and white and then grey colors to see the contrast before I replaced them with the primary colors. Then, the thoughts of the villains in the Disney movies appeared in my mind; they’re mischievous toward the main characters. I compared the villains' colors and noticed their colors repetition were purple, sea green, and a bit grey-white. The two β€œi” are the eyes since the villains always have their eyes on the main characters.

Allies

Do not trust some of the allies. Who knows they lie behind our backs?
I lie (to the) allies.

Some words may have hidden messages, as Allies have a β€œlie.” A lie may affect the stress on the mentality. Futura Extra Bold is a good choice for both words and the font emphasized. Meanwhile the Baskerville Semibold is another good choice and easier to read. This design has a good balance of positive and negative spaces. Using the grid helps to line up the text and typography. Allies, Lie, and the text are all connected.
