Experiential Banner

The theme is Family Genealogy. My mother was from the Philippines and my father was from Thailand. His family moved to the Philippines and grew up there, they were immersed in the Philippines culture. ​​​​​​​

My parents met each other in San Jose, Mindoro in the Philippines; they were neighbors and childhood friends. My parents were introduced to each other by my father's sister. They always talked with my siblings and me about their lives in Mindoro, Philippines.

Banner 1: Family

San Jose, Mindoro

  • Mom and Dad grew up as neighbors, just a few blocks away from each other. 

  • Their community mascot was a Tamaraw (a dwarf buffalo). 

  • The native tribe in Mindoro was Mangyan and influenced the community. 

  • They also grew up with jeepney, a popular/ tourist vehicle. 

Banner 2: Country

Festivals

  • Masskara, masks festival 

  • Dinagyang, religious and cultural festival 

  • Giant Lantern, symbolism of light, the star regarded as a fount of light and a sign of hope 

  • Kadayawan, gives tribute to the lumads, a collective group of indigenous people 

  • Ati-Atihan, celebration in honor of the Infant Jesus, the town’s patron 

Four Potential Systems: Each system selects one banner from each category to create a connection.

The potential banner designs Four banner categories, Family, Country, Exhibit A, and Exhibit B, have various designs and layouts.

Colors Purple means royalty, luxury, nobility, power, and ambition; Golden represents the color of the Philippines’ sun.

Banner 3: Exhibit A

National Dance, Tinikling

  • The dance was influenced by a bird, Tikling that is known for the footwork

  • A Spaniard punishment was converted to a dance

Banner 4: Exhibit B

National Hero, Jose Rizal

  • Jose Rizal was a political activist

  • He wrote a novel that encouraged the Philippines nationalists to fight the Spain before his execution
